SURG 7815 - Advanced Surgery
Description
This course is 4 weeks long.
The overall educational goal is to provide the medical student with an introductory
experience in abdominal organ transplantation surgery, including preoperative evaluation,
exposure to surgical procedures (including organ procurement and transplantation), and
involvement in postoperative management.
Students will develop skills in focused history and physical examination, formulation of
relevant differential diagnoses, and increase their familiarity with surgical anatomy and
physiology relevant to liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. Students will also begin to
understand the complex multidisciplinary care required for transplant patients, including the
role of immunosuppression and long-term graft management.
Students will be assigned to the Abdominal Transplant Surgery Service, which includes
inpatient care, outpatient clinics, and operating room experience.
