This is an online course that teaches wilderness medicine related to backpacking and hiking. Subjects include, lighting injuries, medical aspects of clothing, bites and stings, foot problems, first aid kits, backpacks/back pain, and water treatment. The Backpacking Medicine certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course. Wilderness Medicine - Backpacking/HIking Medicine:This is a non-clinical elective that teaches backpacking and hiking medicine in southern Utah near Zion National Park. It begins with a 2-day lecture series, April 24/25 or May 1/2, 2021. Students will begin hiking on Monday, April 26.2021 betore or after they do the classroom work. There are a number of day hikes and a number of longer hikes in the area around Zion National Park. Students more familiar with backpacking will be able to organize into small groups and go on longer hikes. Students must have their own transportation and transportation costs.

Students will meet Friday April 23, or April 30th, 2021, at 6:00 PM at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Springdale, Utah (outside Zion National Park), for an opening social. Students will get to know each other and become familiar with the area. More instructions will be given then.

This will be "front-country" classroom instruction focusing on backpacking and hiking medicine Saturday and Sunday.

Campsites will be reserved for students Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights during the lecture part of the course directly inside Zion National Park. But for hiking or backpacking days after that students will be responsible for their own camping, places to stay, and food for backpacking.
