Course
SURG 7280 - Research in Surgery
Description
Research involving general surgery and specialty areas of surgery. Special opportunities exist in gastrointestinal physiology, transplantation biology, vascular biology, cardiac physiology, pancreatic disease, and particular subjects in the specialty areas of surgery.

SURG 7280 credit is available to Phase III and IV medical students for independent mentored research in Surgery.

To be approved for enrollment, send the Course Instructor (matt.firpo@hsc.utah.edu) an email describing your project. Please keep this brief (< 500 words). Include background describing the clinical/scientific question, hypotheses being tested, methodology, a description of the data collected, data analysis, expected outcomes, and expectations for exposition (poster, meeting presentation, manuscript).

Include indication from your faculty mentor approving the project, verifying your participation, and acknowledging that your advisor will be responsible for completing an evaluation upon completion of the work. Copying your mentor on email communications will suffice.

The intent of the course is to provide medical students with experience in hypothesis driven research relevant to Surgery. At a minimum, the expectation is that the results of the project be suitable for presentation at a national meeting.

Be sure to include the number of weeks expected to complete the study, keeping in mind that one week credit requires a 40 hour contribution by the student.

Once your project has been approved for SURG 7280 credit (by email), you can register for the course at Student Affairs.
