Course
FP MD 7811 - HPIH Foundations of Health and Principles of Integrative Medicine
Description
This course will introduce the SOM Health Promotion and Integrative Health (HPIH) Pathway. Each course builds on the others to take a student from knowledge to application, starting with themselves, then with patients and lastly within the community. Foundations of Health provides an overview of lifestyle and its role in prevention and treatment of disease. Students will have an opportunity to look at the evidence for nutrition, physical activity, sleep and mindfulness as core foundations for good health.

Principles of Integrative Medicine will look at how lifestyle and integrative therapies can help patients achieve their health care goals alongside conventional medicine. Students will have the opportunity to look at several disease states in an Integrative context, and think about the patient as a whole person, explore the evidence behind specific modalities, meet teams that utilize mix of conventional and integrative techniques, and explore resources to help patients answer safety and efficacy questions. Students will spend time in clinic observing Integrative sessions.
