MD ID 7231 - New Parent/Caregiver
Description
This 1-credit elective offers a unique opportunity for medical students who are new parents or primary caregivers to receive course credit for their valuable lived experiences that shape their personal and professional growth. Caring for a newborn or supporting a relative through significant health challenges brings its own demands; it also fosters resilience, empathy, and insight.
The course is centered on self-directed learning, including curated readings on topics such as parental and caregiver mental health, lactation, and other aspects of caregiving. Students will also participate in weekly check-ins with a course director and submit weekly reflections based on readings and topics discussed during each meeting. The course is structured around current caregiving resources, research, self-reflection, and personal application. It will consist of independent learning, reflection, and four in-person, synchronous 1:1 meetings
with a course director.
