EMER 7200 - Preceptorship in Emergency Medicine
Description
This elective provides medical students the opportunity to engage in a one-on-one clinical learning experience with a
community-based emergency medicine preceptor. Students will actively participate in patient care under direct
supervision, refine their clinical skills, and receive formative feedback in real time. The course emphasizes independent
initiative, professional communication, and integration of emergency medicine principles into patient encounters.
Students are responsible for identifying and securing a qualified emergency medicine preceptor, coordinating a mutually
agreed-upon shift schedule, and ensuring all requirements are met. All shifts must occur outside University of Utah Hospital
and South Jordan ED with non-core faculty preceptors. The course coordinator will review the schedule to avoid conflicts
with other learners. Preceptors will provide both a pass/fail grade and detailed narrative feedback highlighting strengths
and areas for improvement.
