Course
FP MD 7813 - Resilience in Health Care and Health Behavior Change in Patients and Communities
Description
This course will continue to expand students' knowledge in the Health Promotion Integrative Health Pathway by looking at the specific needs of health care workers. Burnout in health care is at an all-time high, yet students enter medical school as highly resilient and compassionate individuals. This course will evaluate the protective factors that help individuals and health systems succeed in providing compassionate patient centered care while tending to self-care and work-life integration. Students will review the principles of resilience that help physicians and patients lead fulfilling lives and explore how to recognize individuals at risk. The course will examine system issues that can build sustainable workplaces and support physicians in optimal patient care. The course will look further into how to apply the principles covered in the HPIH Pathway thus far to patients. Sessions will focus on helping patients make the lifestyle changes discussed in other semesters. Programmatic and one-on-one approaches will be covered including appreciative inquiry and motivational interviewing. Student driven content will comprise the final session. Students will present on topics of interest from the pathway as they begin to synthesize material to develop a deeper understanding.
