SURG 7801 - Leadership in Healthcare
Description
Leadership in Healthcare will provide students the opportunity to interact with established leaders within the healthcare system and learn practical leadership skills to apply to their own careers. Over the series of five sessions, students will explore five domains of leadership in healthcare: self-management, team management, effective communication, systems-based practice, and executing towards a vision. Each session will feature a guided Q&A session with a local healthcare leader centered on each of these topics. Pre-reading relevant to the guest speaker's topic will prepare students to engage the speaker effectively. Topics will be further explored through application exercises relevant to each session's topic (e.g. crafting an effective mission and vision statement, delivering a good "elevator speech", giving a dynamic presentation, etc.) that will be shared and discussed as a group in class. These assignments and discussions will empower learners to further explore each session's theme apply lessons learned to their own projects and future careers.
