MD ID 7705 - Advanced Integrated Science Course, Beyond BMI: a multidisciplinary approach to obesity
Description
This Advanced Integrated Science Course is a 4-week course that will take a multidisciplinary approach to obesity and its related complications. We will analyze the physiologic, genetic, pathologic, nutritional, psychologic, social, and metabolic contributions and consequences of obesity and obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and infertility. Body size bias, food insecurity and justice, health policy, current and potential future medical, surgical, and minimally invasive treatments for obesity and diabetes will be explored. Non-classroom learning experiences will include multiple clinics (Comprehensive Weight Management Clinic, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Endocrinology/Reproductive disorders) and lifestyle medicine-related activities (Food Pharmacy, Culinary Medicine, Health coaching, Edible Garden).
