SURG 7606 - Introduction to Emergency Medicine-University Hospital
Description
This two-week elective course is for third-year students who have already completed at least one of the following core rotations (IM, Surgery, OB) as an introduction to the field of Emergency Medicine. Students will participate in a variety of EM related activities including: 5 ED clinical shifts at the University of Utah Emergency Department and 2 at South Jordan ED; Wednesday EM Residency Didactics between 8am-1pm; ultrasound educational sessions (if applicable); a Toxicology session the second Monday of the rotation; student-specific didactics; 1 EM nursing experience shift. Textbooks and Internet access to various on-line medical education and reference sites are available in the ED office. The learning experience will center on the student's active care of his or her patients in the Emergency Department. Procedures, such as laceration repair, paracentesis, central line placement, fracture/joint reduction/relocation, may be performed by the student under supervision as dictated by their patient's condition.
