MD ID 7251 - Genetics & Medicine - Ethical, Legal, Social Issues
Description
Genetics and Medicine: Ethical, Legal and Social Implications is a graduate-level course that introduces students to the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of human genetics and genomics research. The course will meet (on Zoom) for 13, two-hour sessions throughout the Spring semester. Through lectures, class discussions, and case study analyses, students will have the opportunity to critically examine and explore current and emerging ELSI topics.This course is mandatory for trainees in the Genetic Counseling Masters degree and Genomic Medicine T32 training program; medical students and students in other graduate or professional degree programs (Law and Philosophy) are welcome to participate.

Tuesdays 4:15 - 6:15 pm, held over Zoom.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Describe the ethical, legal, and social implications of human genetics and genomics
research.
(2) Articulate different views and positions related to the ELSI topics covered in class.
(3) Analyze a case study by identifying the relevant:
a. Ethical, legal, and social issue(s) at play
b. Stakeholders
c. Competing values
d. Potential resolutions
