Description
Brief Description of Course
This 1-credit elective course is designed to support students participating in the NIH- and RUUTE-funded summer research programs; other medical or graduate students are welcome to take the course. The Research & Innovation elective is an opportunity to explore the fundamentals of research and scientific communication and inspire future physicians and clinician-scientists to discover how patient care, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disease can be improved by biomedical research. Class session topics will include responsible and ethical conduct of research, exploration of the joys and challenges of medical research, learning to be an effective mentee, appropriate application of biostatistics, and designing a model or summary image to communicate your research.

Course Objectives
1.To demonstrate knowledge in the responsible and ethical conduct of research.
2.To learn from faculty, peers, and near-peers about the joys and struggles of collaborating in team-based science.
3.To be able to write a structured abstract and a short research description that effectively communicate your research question, methods for addressing the question and results.
