MD ID 6190 - Clinical Problem-Solving for Medical Technology Innovations
Description
Clinical Problem Solving for Medical Technology Innovations introduces students to a structured method for developing high-impact, innovative, disruptive medical devices and technologies with potential for successful commercialization and translation into real-world clinical practice. The foundation of this method is the structure described in the Stanford Biodesign system (Yack et al., see textbook information below). Students will learn to approach real-world clinical problems from a multidisciplinary global perspective, and then to identify diagnostic and therapeutic deficiencies that can be addressed through the process of innovating medical technologies. Students will also learn to incorporate end-user feedback, U.S. FDA regulatory assessment, intellectual property (IP) assessment, and business commercialization perspectives in the initial development of new technologies.

This course will provide the academic foundation for mastery of a structured medical technology innovation and development process from clinical needs finding to needs analysis. Online module completion, textbook chapter reading assignments, and self-study assignments are critical.
