MD ID 7230 - Spanish for Healthcare Professionals
Description
Spanish for Healthcare Professionals is an elective four week course designed for medical students who wish to learn Spanish and cross-cultural training as part of their medical education.

BASIC SECTION:
The Basic section elective one credit, 12-session, weekly, in person evening course taught by Dr. Davis and designed for medical students who wish to learn Spanish and cross-cultural training as part of their medical education.

The course will provide an introduction to basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary through medical contexts. The course is organized by the objectives of clinical protocols, the patient interview, and the physical exam. Students will be provided with specific and detailed information about the learning goals for each session of the class. Instruction includes medical and basic conversational dialogues and vocabulary. Instruction is oriented around a systematic, comprehensive set of clinically oriented questions that can be used in communicating with Spanish-speaking patients in the clinical encounter.
The students will be evaluated through formative assessments with instructor(s) and Spanish-speaking patients.

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED SECTION:
Intermediate/Advanced section is an in-person course for students who already have basic conversational Spanish skills and would like to enhance their language skills to improve clinical encounters. Taught by Dr. Capella, an integrative pediatrician and native Spanish speaker, the course teaches medical Spanish vocabulary through mock clinical encounters. Students will start off practicing the basics of taking vitals, collecting a clinical history, and performing a physical exam in Spanish. They will then advance to more complex mock clinical encounters drawing on cases from primary care and a few specialities (dependent on student interest).

This course meets weekly on Wednesday evenings (6-8pm) from mid-January through the end of April. Students are allowed two absences. There is also a requirement to complete 15-20 hours in a student-led free clinic where students will have the opportunity to practice some of their language skills (though they are not required to act as an official interpreter). Finally, there are weekly short video assignments to help hone language skills and a final short reflection paper.
